Support Services

Following is a list of university services offered at the Fairfax Campus. For more information, call Fairfax Campus Information Services at (703) 993-1005.

Division of Instructional and Technology Support Services(DoIT)
DoIT provides instructional support services to students, faculty, and staff by providing the following services:

  • Faculty/Staff: Resources and support for instructional improvement, information on technology training, software workshops, and a monthly open discussion group (DoIT Dialogues) during Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Students: Technology training and facilities in support curricular and extracurricular activities.
  • DoIT units include: Student Technology Assistance and Resource (STAR) Center, the Instructional Resource Center (IRC), GMU-TV, and Classroom Technologies.
  • There are three computer labs on the Fairfax Campus. They are located in Johnson Center (rooms 340, 341, and 343), Innovation Hall (room 301), and the Field House. Email Express Terminals can be found in Sub I, Sub II, Johnson Center, Hanover, Dominion, Commonwealth, Student Apartments, and Innovation Hall. See information on Computer Lab Hours.

Center for the Arts

The Center for the Arts provides free student tickets to events in the Concert Hall, TheaterSpace, and Harris Theater with a valid GMU ID. You must reserve your free tickets in advance.

Financial Aid

The Office of Student Financial Aid provides financial counseling, referral and information resources, and financial assistance in the form of grants, loans, and work-study jobs. For more information, call the Direct Online Aid Resource System (DOLARS) at 993-4GMU.

GMU-TV

GMU-TV is an award-winning network that provides a wide variety of educational informational, and public affairs programming to Northern Virginia, the nation's capital, and the world. This is accomplished by producing quality programming designed to support excellence in learning and teaching. Each semester GMU-TV broadcasts 15 to 20 classes for which college credit can be earned.

Information Technology Unit (ITU)

ITU provides administrative and academic computing technology systems to benefit the faculty, staff, and students at George Mason University. Support services such as the university's telecommunications system, the campus computer store, free computer training, and a help desk service (Support Center) are also made available by ITU in support of the university community.   • The Support Center on the Fairfax campus provides telephone support service during the hours of 8a.m. to 7p.m., Monday through Friday. Walk-in assistance is available Monday through Friday, 8:30a.m. to 5p.m. In addition, their web site contains downloadable software and on-line help documentation.

Innovation Hall

Innovation Hall provides fully wired classrooms -- offering instructors and students access to state-of-the-art technology to enhance the learning process. The four-story, 104,000-square-foot building was designed to allow full integration of Internet technology into course curriculum, facilitate distance learning, and offer advanced telecommunication and networking capabilities.

    George Mason's twice weekly student newspaper is distributed to various buildings on the Fairfax campus including: the Johnson Center, Student Union Buildings I and II.
  • Career Services
    Phone: 993-2370
    Services include career consultation, workshops and seminars, a career library, and internships. The Career Services Center is located in Student Union Building I, Room 348.
  • Counseling Center
    Phone: 993-2380
    Professional counselors and psychologists provide individual and group counseling, workshops, and outreach programs to students, faculty, and staff. The Counseling Center is located in Student Union Building I, Room 364.
  • Student Health Insurance

    Applications are available on the Fairfax campus in Student Union Building I, Room 252E.
  • Student Health Services

    Student Health Services offers a confidential health service that includes components of treatment, self-care, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Sexual Assault Services

    Services available for both men and women include information on sexual assault, sexual harassment, and stalking; crisis intervention; psychological, medical, and judicial support; and volunteer/intern opportunities.

University Police

University Police officers are responsible for maintaining order and public safety 24 hours a day year-round. Officers regularly patrol the streets, parkinglots, and grounds of the campus. In addition, an Escort Service is available during Fall and Spring semesters from 6:30p.m. to 1:30a.m. to provide vehicle and walking escorts anywhere on the Fairfax campus. Anyone needing the service can call 993-HELP (4357) or use any of the 53 call boxes located on campus.

University Relations
University Relations provides communications and outreach support for all three campuses. Following is a list of available services at the Arlington Campus.

The Environmental Health and Safety Office provides guidance and direction in occupational safety and health, environmental control, fire safety, safety-oriented training programs, building and equipment safety, and risk management.

  • Apple Federal Credit Union

    The credit union offers a variety of savings, checking, and loan programs for GMU students, faculty, and staff. The Fairfax Campus office hours are: Monday through Friday, 9a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Bookstore
    Phone: 993-2666, Location: Johnson Center, 1st Floor
    Barnes and Noble now operates the GMU Bookstore. On the Fairfax campus it is located in the Johnson Center in the same space as the old bookstore. Hours of operation are: Monday through Thursday 8a.m. to 8p.m., Friday 8a.m. to 4p.m., and Saturday, 10a.m. to 3p.m.
  • Chevy Chase Bank

    Chevy Chase Bank has a branch office in the Johnson Center, across from the Bookstore. Hours of operation are: Monday ? Thursday: 9am-8pm; Friday: 9am-5pm and Saturday: 10am-2pm. ATMs are located in the Patriot Center, Student Union Building I and II.
  • Dining Services

    Services located on the Fairfax Campus include a traditional all-you-care-to-eat dining facility called Ciao Hall in Student Union Building II; a food court featuring national names such as Chick-Fil-A and Taco Bell Express; La Patisserie, a gourmet coffee shop; Mason's Market, featuring comfort foods and low-fat ethnic cuisine in the Bistro; a Starbucks Coffee Cart (in the Bookstore); and convenience stores in the Johnson Center and Student Union Building I.
  • Mail Services
    Phone: 993-2691, Location: Student Union Building II, Lower Level
    Faculty, staff, and students can buy stamps, mail letters and packages (both on- and off-campus through Mail Service Center. There are drop boxes located behind Student Union Building I and Student Union Building II. All transactions are done on a cash basis only. Hours of operation are: Mail Service Center, 7a.m. to 5p.m., Student package pickup, 8:30a.m. to 5p.m., Stamp Sales Window, 8:30a.m. to 4p.m.
  • Mason Meal Plan

    Several plans make eating on campus convenient for students, faculty, and staff. If you have a food service contract with Sodexho Marriott, the wide magnetic strip will access your meal plan.
  • Photo ID
    Phone: 993-2870, Location: Student Union Building II, Lower Level
    The green Photo ID card for students, faculty, and staff on the Fairfax Campus is processed in the Photo ID Office. For the Fall 2000 semester only, all new student ID cards will be issued. See the Photo ID web site for detailed information. Photo IDs are valid with a current validation sticker. Students can pick up stickers after they register for classes. Faculty and staff will receive a current validation sticker through your department.
  • Parking Services

    Faculty, staff, and students must have a parking decal to park on campus. Decals may be purchased for a year, semester, summer, or week. Faculty and staff may obtain decals on-line. Students must purchase decals in Student Union II, Lower Level. Hours are Monday-Thursday, 8:30a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, 8:30a.m. to 5p.m.

    Handicap Parking Temporary and long-term handicapped parking permits are available for students, faculty, and staff. Fees are the same as regular decal fees. A valid George Mason ID and proof of disability (i.e. a doctor's note, DMV hangtag) are required. DMV permits alone are not sufficient in George Mason handicapped spaces.

    Print Services operates three copy centers on the Fairfax campus:
    • Johnson Copy Center
      Phone: 993-2561 or 993-9083
      This center offers a full line of services including photocopying, design and production of t-shirts, flyers, brochures, with various binding and cover options. It is also equipped with a network printer called the Xerox DocuTech that allows faculty and staff members to send print jobs directly to it from their office computers. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:30a.m. to 7:30p.m. and Friday, 8:30a.m. to 5:00p.m.
    • Mason Hall Copy Center
      Phone: 993-8795 or 993-8796
      Located on the ground floor of Mason Hall, Room D11, this center supports copying services for the staff at Mason Hall and serves as a back-up for the other two copy centers on the Fairfax campus. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30a.m. to 5p.m.
    • Robinson Copy Center
      Phone: 993-2560 or 993-2559
      Located on the third floor, Room B-301, this center provides copying services for the faculty and staff of Robinson Hall, as well as supporting the other two Fairfax campus copy centers. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:30a.m. to 7:30p.m. and Friday, 8:30a.m. to 5p.m.
