I. SCOPE
This Administrative Policy applies to all George Mason University students,
faculty, staff and campus visitors, and to all campuses of the University.
II. POLICY STATEMENT
This Policy was created to promote the overall learning environment, the
aesthetic appeal of the campus, an inclusive campus community. Excessive
chalked messages and pictures can be detrimental to these goals.
III. RESPONSIBILITIES
The Office of Student Activities is charged with providing guidance and
support to the University community in educating groups and individuals
on appropriate communication and advertising methods on campus. The Office
of the Dean of Students will manage all disciplinary action following
from this policy. Questions regarding this policy should be directed to
the Office of Student Activities.
IV. PROCEDURES
The following will be strictly enforced as the George Mason University
Graffiti Policy:
· Chalked messages are allowed on sidewalks that are exposed to rainfall.
· Chalked messages are prohibited on all stairs, walls, and buildings. The only exception to this is that chalked messages/pictures are allowed on the designated Spirit Wall located on the north side of Robinson B. That wall is designated with a university “Spirit Wall” banner.
· All chalked messages should meet community standards, and not include profanity, obscene pictures, or disparaging remarks.
Organizations and individuals who violate these policies will be charged
the cost of removing the chalking by the George Mason University Physical
Plant.
V. AMENDMENTS AND ADDITIONS
All amendments and additions to this Administrative Policy are to be
reviewed and approved by the Office of Student Activities and the Office
of the Dean of Students.
VI. EFFECTIVE DATE AND APPROVAL
The policies herein are effective August 1, 2003. This Administrative Policy shall be reviewed and revised as warranted.
